In a terrifying home invasion on Japonica Way, Norton, David Hornby, 40, a drifter with no fixed address, broke into a house in the early hours of Sunday, 2nd July. The 76-year-old occupant was asleep when the attack began.
The victim woke to strange noises and went to check, only to be confronted by Hornby. He assaulted her, tied her arms and legs, threatened violence, and stole valuables along with her bank card. She was left bound for over two hours, suffering facial injuries and severe shock.
Speaking about the ordeal, the victim said, “At the time of the incident, I felt violated. I was kept a prisoner in my own home. Tying me up and making me fear for my own life. That night I thought I was going to die.”
She added, “I cannot be prouder of the community I am surrounded by. The amount of support they have provided me, I cannot thank them enough. They have all, without them realising, helped me get through this dark time.”
“I will get there day by day surrounded by plenty of support. It does not diminish the effects it has had but I know I still have a life to live. I am going to try my hardest to live it the best I can.”
Stockton and Middlesbrough CID detectives, along with Crime Scene Officers, launched an immediate investigation following the incident. Hornby was identified, arrested the next day, and charged.
He appeared at Teesside Crown Court on 1st August, where he pleaded guilty to robbery, false imprisonment, and two counts of fraud by false representation. Sentencing took place on 27th October, resulting in a 10-year jail term for Hornby.
