George Jones, 22, was arrested after breaking into a property on Cornwall Road early on the morning of Saturday 14 October. During the burglary, he stole cash, clothes, mobile phones, and a set of car keys.
Using the stolen car keys, Jones quickly drove off in the victim’s vehicle. Police acted fast, obtaining images of the suspect which led to his identification within days.
The stolen car was spotted in Shepton Mallet on Friday 20 October with Jones behind the wheel. This sighting resulted in his arrest.
Jones, who has no fixed address, was charged with burglary, theft of a motor vehicle, and multiple driving offences related to the stolen car. He also admitted to two other thefts in Glastonbury on 26 September, involving the theft of a handbag containing cash and shoplifting alcohol.
PC Jim Card stated, “Jones’ involvement was quickly established. Being caught driving the stolen vehicle left him little choice but to plead guilty to several offences.”
Jones has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced at Taunton Crown Court on Monday, 20 November. Police have confirmed that the stolen car has been returned to its rightful owner.
