William “Bill” Malcolm, 61, has been convicted by a Newcastle Crown Court jury of multiple sexual offences and abuse at a care home in the North East. Malcolm, who lives in West Hope Close, South Shields, was found guilty of 10 counts of sexual assault, two counts of ill-treatment of a person in care, and one count of racially aggravated harassment.
The court heard disturbing testimony detailing Malcolm’s abusive behaviour towards vulnerable residents and staff members. He was found guilty of repeatedly kissing and cuddling two vulnerable female residents without their consent. In one particularly shocking incident, Malcolm thrust his hips towards a patient who was sitting in a rocking chair, an act the victim strongly rejected.
In addition to abusing residents, Malcolm sexually assaulted three women who were not residents of the care home. Witnesses also reported that he frequently directed racist and homophobic insults at both staff and residents. One colleague described his conduct as “disgusting,” highlighting his foul-mouthed verbal abuse and degrading comments about people’s bodies.
Malcolm was convicted on all charges. The judge has ordered a mental health assessment to be completed before sentencing, which is scheduled for April 30. Malcolm remains out on bail pending the sentencing hearing.
The case has caused outrage within the local community, raising serious concerns about the safeguarding of vulnerable people in care settings. A spokesperson for the care provider stated: “We are appalled by the actions of this individual. We take the safety and dignity of our residents and staff extremely seriously, and we continue to support those affected during this difficult time.”
