Batley Duo Locked Up for Speeding Scam Cover-Up
A Batley man and woman have landed behind bars after trying to dodge speeding points by perverting the course of justice.
Speeding Scam Uncovered
Fazila Loonat, 43, and Afshin Amini, 34, both from Church Walk, Batley, were jailed for 14 and 12 weeks respectively. They admitted lying to cops to cover up a speeding offence caught on camera back in July 2020.
Their Mercedes C220 triggered a mobile speed camera on the A644 Huddersfield Road, Dewsbury, on July 5, 2022. When police questioned them, the pair gave details of a driver who didn’t even exist. They claimed the car had been out on a “test” drive by this phantom person on the day of the offence.
Even more suspicious, the address provided belonged to a mini-mart owned by Loonat and Amini. Despite this, they stuck to their story and were eventually charged with perverting the course of justice.
Police Fight Back Against Dodgy Drivers
The West Yorkshire Prosecutions and Casualty Prevention Unit, which tackles road safety and traffic offenders, warned: “Trying to avoid justice won’t work – we will find you.”
This specialised Digital Submission and Investigations team, formed in 2019, cracks down on fibbers attempting to dodge speeding penalties. So far, their work has resulted in over twenty years of jail time handed out for similar offences.
Court’s Tough Message
Rachel Wainwright from West Yorkshire Police’s Casualty Prevention Unit said: “Perverting the course of justice is a serious offence. Those who lie to avoid prosecution should be fully aware of the penalties.”
“These two made false statements and went to great lengths to back their lies, wasting police time in the process.
“They have now been made to face the consequences in court.”
Wainwright also urged motorists to help police keep roads safe by reporting dangerous driving through the Safer Roads Media Submissions portal.
