Ayrshire Fire Chief Slams Abuse on Brave Firefighters
Ayrshire’s top fire boss has blasted attacks on firefighters, warning such behaviour won’t be tolerated. Local Senior Officer James Scott urged respect for crews risking their lives to protect the public.
Firefighters Face Shocking Abuse
LSO Scott condemned those who obstruct firefighters doing their job. “It’s frustrating and disappointing when crews face verbal or physical abuse while helping communities,” he said. “This comes from a small minority who don’t appreciate the sacrifices made on the frontline.”
Scott promised to work with police to track down offenders and ensure they face tough consequences. “Those responsible could end up with criminal records affecting their future employment,” he warned.
Recent Attacks Highlight the Problem
The fire chief spoke out after a 27-year-old Ayrshire man was convicted at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court for threatening firefighters and removing a smoke detector during an incident in Stevenston. He got 200 hours unpaid work and two years’ supervision.
Scott also recalled Bonfire Night last year, when crews were targeted twice within two hours in Ardrossan. Fire appliances were pelted with objects and police had to escort firefighters to safely tackle blazes. Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Fire Crews Under Attack Every Three Days
Statistics reveal a firefighter in Scotland is attacked every three days. Over six years, 590 incidents involved abuse or objects thrown at staff or vehicles.
“This reckless behaviour slows down emergency response,” Scott stressed. “It also drags in police resources, which is unacceptable.”
He praised Ayrshire’s law-abiding residents for supporting fire crews and urged them to report any abuse to Police Scotland on 101, or anonymously via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
Firefighters: More Than Just Emergency Responders
Scott highlighted firefighter work beyond emergencies. “We engage young people through Fire Reach and Young Firefighters schemes, teach CPR, and promote home safety and responsible citizenship,” he said.
“Our Home Fire Safety Visits help protect vulnerable residents by checking and installing smoke detectors, plus offering safety advice.”
He concluded: “Given all they do for our communities, it’s shocking anyone would abuse a firefighter.”
