Ex-Cop Declan Jones Found Dead After Jailing and Dismissal
Declan Jones, a former West Midlands Police officer, was found dead at a Bromsgrove address on Wednesday. Jones was sacked from the police force in September while serving a six-month prison sentence.
Recent Convictions and Dismissal
Jones had been jailed for assaulting two individuals, including a 15-year-old boy, on consecutive days earlier this month. On April 20, 2020, he attacked a man in Aston, Birmingham, after wrongly suspecting him of stealing a phone and bike. The following day, Jones assaulted a teenager in the Newtown area, wrongly accusing him of drug offences.
District Judge Shamim Qureshi, during sentencing, said the teen “is never going to trust a police officer again.” Jones was dismissed for gross misconduct, with Chief Constable Sir David Thompson apologising to both victims. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) had investigated him for excessive use of force.
No Suspicion of Foul Play
West Mercia Police said officers do not believe anyone else was involved in Jones’s death. He was pronounced dead around 12.45pm on December 28, following welfare concerns raised at his Worcestershire address.
IOPC Reacts to Former Officer’s Death
“We have been made aware of the death of a former West Midlands Police officer and our thoughts are with all of those affected at this very difficult time. As such it would be inappropriate to say anything further at this stage,” an IOPC spokesperson said.
