Explosives Stash Man Jailed After Fuel Station Drama
An explosives scare has ended with a 57-year-old man locked up after trying to skip out on petrol payments – while hauling dangerous bombs in his van.
Anthony Laszewski, from Twickenham Road, Isleworth, was sentenced at the Old Bailey to 20 months in jail. His charges include possession of explosive substances (18 months) and making off without payment (4 weeks) plus attempted making off without payment (4 weeks).
Fuel Fraud Uncovers Explosives
Laszewski was caught after filling his van and petrol cans with £70 of fuel on January 9, having previously stolen £29.41 worth on December 31. Staff at the petrol station recognised him immediately.
While filling up, a sharp-eyed worker spotted cellophane hiding the front number plate, removed it, and took the van keys from the ignition. When Laszewski realised his keys were gone, he demanded them back inside the shop. Staff refused and called the police.
Undeterred, Laszewski tried to get his keys back again, only to be denied once more. In a bold move, he removed the rear number plate – which was different – and left the garage on foot, without his vehicle.
Police Find Explosives Hidden in Van
Officers arriving found Laszewski was uninsured to drive the van. A search revealed a box containing low explosive substances, powders, propellants, and flares.
Laszewski was arrested on January 10 and claimed the materials were for fireworks night. A subsequent search of his flat uncovered more fireworks.
Counter Terror Boss Praises Petrol Station Staff
“Following discovery of the dangerous items in Laszewski’s van, officers acted swiftly to arrest him and remove a potential threat,” said Commander Clarke Jarrett, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command.
“I praise the garage staff for their decisive actions, which helped prevent possible injury or worse.”
