Harrow Horror: Rapist Who Tried to Kill Woman Jailed for Life
Aaron Murphy, 21, has been locked up for life after a vicious attack in Harrow that left a woman fighting for her life.
The dangerous thug, who has no fixed address, was sentenced at the Central Criminal Court on Friday, 14 August. He pleaded guilty to two counts of rape and attempted murder following the brutal assault in May.
Brutal Attack in Early Hours
Police rushed to Havelock Place at 2.54am on Thursday, 21 May after a disturbance was reported. When officers arrived within six minutes, they found the victim seriously injured and distraught.
She told officers she had been raped and savagely beaten by a stranger in the street. Paramedics took her to hospital where she was treated for a fractured cheekbone, bruised and swollen eyes, and multiple facial injuries.
Heroic Public Help Leads to Arrest
While detectives combed the crime scene the next day, members of the public spotted a suspicious man and quickly alerted officers. Police found Murphy hiding on a fire escape nearby and arrested him on suspicion of rape.
During questioning, Murphy chillingly admitted he planned to kill the woman after raping her twice and beating her brutally. He only fled when police sirens sounded.
CCTV footage shows Murphy ambushing the victim, hauling her into a service road near an underground car park where the attack took place.
Life Behind Bars for “Very Dangerous” Offender
Murphy was charged on 22 May with attempted murder and two counts of rape. The court deemed him a dangerous offender and sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum of nine years behind bars. He will also remain on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
“Murphy is clearly a very dangerous individual and prison is the only place for him,” said Detective Sergeant Michael Daly.
“He was callous and uncaring when describing his sick behaviour, showing no remorse for the trauma he caused.”
“The judge stated that no other sentence would adequately protect the public. I salute the public who helped us catch this monster so quickly, and the victim, who has been incredibly brave.”
Commander Melanie Dales, head of Met’s Public Protection, added: “We take these matters extremely seriously and encourage victims to come forward.”
