Shock Murder in N5: Young Woman Found Strangled by Garages

On the afternoon of 1 June 1974, 22-year-old Eileen Cotter’s lifeless body was found dumped in front of a block of garages behind Hamilton Park, N5. The cause of death was strangulation.

Cold Case: No Arrests at First

Despite launching a murder probe immediately, police failed to charge anyone at the time.

Break in Investigation After Four Weeks

Then on 22 June, 79-year-old John Apelgren from Bryden Close, SE26, was arrested on suspicion of murder. Later that day, he was charged not only with Eileen’s murder but also with indecent assault against another woman.

Court Date Set

Apelgren is due to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, 23 June. The hearing is expected to shed light on this grim case.
