Manchester Police Haul £1.8 Million in Biggest Gold Bust Ever

Packed Gold Bars Spark Major Crime Probe

Greater Manchester Police have pulled off their biggest gold seizure in history. Last year, officers stopped a man at Manchester Airport carrying five hefty gold bars in his hand luggage — worth a jaw-dropping £1.8 million.

Crime Links Lead to Massive Confiscation

The 15kg stash was snapped up under the Proceeds of Crime Act amid suspicions it was tied to illegal activity. GMP’s Economic and Cyber Crime Unit, backed by Legal Services, launched a full-scale investigation. The case headed to Manchester Magistrates’ Court.

Record-Breaking Forfeiture Boosts Community Funds

On 19 February, the court handed down a forfeiture order for the full £1.81 million value — the highest ever asset seizure for GMP. Half of the cash will now funnel into local projects through GMP’s Asset Recovery Incentivisation Scheme (ARIS), supporting charities, community groups, and initiatives right across Greater Manchester.
