President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday following reports of suspected gunfire that disrupted the event in Washington, D.C.
The incident prompted a rapid response from the Secret Service and law enforcement agencies. Authorities confirmed that both President Trump, the First Lady, and other protectees were unharmed. A suspect is currently in custody.
Witnesses at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner reported hearing between five and eight shots, which led to panic and immediate evacuation orders. Secret Service agents shouted “shots fired” as chaos erupted, while officials moved guests to safety and secured the venue.
The suspected shooter, identified as a 30-year-old man from California, was arrested at the scene. During the incident, a Secret Service agent was reportedly hit by protective gear, but no serious injuries have been reported among attendees.
Members of the National Guard took positions inside the venue to secure the premises. The Secret Service confirmed that there is no evidence of additional shooters. Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and interim Metropolitan Police Chief Jeffrey W. Carroll responded to the scene to oversee the ongoing investigation.
On Truth Social, President Trump praised the rapid and courageous response of law enforcement and the Secret Service. He confirmed the suspect’s arrest and urged the event to continue, subject to law enforcement guidance.
President Trump added that the event is expected to be rescheduled within 30 days. He also confirmed that Vice President JD Vance and Cabinet members present remain in “perfect condition.”
