Young mum, 28, dies after suspected allergic reaction to crab meal
Tragic Collapse After Seafood Dinner
Gayathiri Jeyatheesan, a 28-year-old mother from Bootle, tragically passed away on January 25 after collapsing at home. The devoted shopkeeper suffered a suspected allergic reaction after eating a crab dish she had prepared as a special treat for her visiting mother from Sri Lanka.
Husband’s Desperate Plea for Help
At the time, Gayathiri was with her 15-month-old son and her mother. Feeling unwell, she quickly sent a WhatsApp message to her husband Selvarajah, who was working at their Stanley Road convenience store. He immediately called an ambulance, but despite paramedics’ best efforts, Gayathiri could not be saved.
Family Devastated Ahead of Wedding Anniversary
The family is heartbroken, especially as Gayathiri and Selvarajah had just two days earlier planned to celebrate their third wedding anniversary. Gayathiri had even bought new clothes for the occasion and had plans to visit the Shri Muthu Mariamman Temple.
Suspected Allergy Shock to Crab
Friends revealed Gayathiri had a known prawn allergy but had never had issues eating crab before. She had enjoyed crab in Sri Lanka but this was her first time cooking it in the UK, waiting for her mother’s help to prepare it properly.
Beloved Community Figure and Hardworking Mother
Gayathiri was a familiar face in Bootle, known for her dedication to the family store and her loving nature towards her son. Family friend Ananth Raj said:
“She was a lovely and kind person who worked very hard. She got up every morning at 6am and worked until mid-afternoon. Everybody loved her. The family’s suffering is awful to see. Her mother is in a terrible way.”

The community has been rocked by Gayathiri’s sudden death. Friends and customers recall her warm smile and tireless work ethic at the shop. Tributes continue to pour in for the much-loved mum.
Support for Husband and Baby
