Six Dead and One Critical After Horror Multi-Car Crash in Birmingham
Six people have died and a seventh remains in critical condition following a massive six-vehicle pile-up in Birmingham shortly after 1am this Sunday. The smash unfolded at the underpass entrance on Lee Bank Middleway, near the Bristol Road junction.
Rapid Response to Devastating Crash
Emergency services rushed to the scene within minutes. Two ambulances arrived within seven minutes, backed up by a total of five ambulances, three paramedic officers, the Hazardous Area Response Team, the MERIT Trauma doctor, and the Air Ambulance Service Critical Care Car.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman revealed the scale of the carnage: “Six vehicles were involved in this extensive crash.”
Survivors and Tragedy in Equal Measure
- In the first car, a man and a woman escaped with relatively minor injuries despite the vehicle being badly damaged. Both were taken to Heartlands Hospital for assessment.
- The second vehicle, a black cab flipped on its side, claimed the lives of the driver and a female passenger who died at the scene. A male passenger was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital but later died.
- Four men were ejected from the third car. Three were confirmed dead on the spot. The fourth was critically injured and transferred urgently to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
- Three other vehicles tried to avoid the crash but were involved. Minor injuries and no assistance were reported for some occupants.
‘Extremely Complex and Distressing’ Crash
The ambulance service stressed the complexity of the scene, praising multi-agency teamwork. “This was an extremely complex and distressing crash scene,” said their spokesman. They have already debriefed staff and are providing ongoing support.
