Children’s Author Shot in Shocking Neighbour Dispute
James Nash, 43, a beloved children’s book author, artist, and parish councillor, was critically injured after being shot in the head at his thatched cottage in Upper Enham, Andover. The suspected gunman? His own neighbour, 34-year-old Alex Sartain.
Homemade Shotgun Used in Terrifying Attack
Police were called just after 3pm to the Nash family home on MacCullum Road. Sartain, who lived just a few hundred yards away, reportedly used a homemade shotgun in the brazen attack. A local source described Sartain as mentally unstable and a user of drugs and alcohol. The motive behind the shooting remains a mystery.
After the attack, Sartain escaped the scene on a Yamaha R1 motorcycle. Minutes later, the bike crashed on the A343 near the Essebourne Manor Hotel. The rider died instantly. Police confirmed a 34-year-old man – believed to be Sartain – was the victim of the crash. Next of kin have been informed.
Wife Also Injured in Horrific Incident
James Nash’s wife, Dr Sarah Nash, a senior space scientist, was also assaulted during the attack and sustained minor injuries. Emergency services, including the Hampshire and IOW Air Ambulance, rushed to the scene to help the couple.
Mr Nash remains in critical condition at Southampton General Hospital, suffering serious head injuries. Forensic teams combed the scene for evidence as police continue to piece together what sparked the violent outburst.
Police and Community React
Chief Inspector Kory Thorne confirmed officers are not searching for anyone else linked to the incident. A full investigation is underway, including a mandatory inquiry by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) into the circumstances surrounding the fatal motorcycle crash during police pursuit.
Cllr Phil North said: “An absolutely horrible incident in my Bourne Valley Ward. My thoughts are with James Nash’s family and local communities. The police have reassured us they believe the suspect is deceased, which should offer some comfort. Let’s hope James makes a full recovery.”
Residents in Upper Enham and Hurstbourne Tarrant may notice a continued police presence in the coming days. Officers are urging anyone with information to contact police on 101, quoting references ‘Op Plaque’ for the shooting or ‘Op Crystal’ for the motorcycle crash.
