Sainsbury’s and Matalan Pull Popular Xmas Stocking Filler Over Nickel Allergy Risk
Nickel Levels Trigger Urgent Recall
Sainsbury’s and Matalan have launched an immediate recall of the Beeline Belly Bar, a trendy flower-themed body jewellery piece. Tests revealed dangerously high nickel levels, breaching UK safety limits.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) warned that prolonged skin contact with nickel can cause nasty allergic reactions, including contact dermatitis.
“The product presents a chemical risk as elevated levels of nickel were found. Nickel is a skin sensitizer and can cause allergic reactions if present in items that come into direct and prolonged contact with the skin,” said the Office for Product Safety and Standards.
Shoppers Told to Stop Using & Return for Full Refund
Customers who bought the Beeline Belly Bar from Sainsbury’s or Matalan are urged to stop wearing it immediately. Both retailers will accept returns with no receipt needed and offer full refunds.
Beeline, the bar’s supplier, apologised for the safety slip-up:
“Product safety is our top priority. During follow-up checks, an elevated nickel value was found in a part of the belly bar. Wearing this belly bar can cause allergic reactions. We are removing it from sale and offering full refunds for returned items.”
Watch Out for Skin Irritation
The UKHSA advises anyone experiencing redness or irritation after wearing the belly bar to stop using it and seek medical advice if symptoms persist.
