A major police cordon in Lancing has been lifted after a suspicious item turned out to be part of a bomb hoax. The tense drama erupted on Sunday afternoon, triggering a swift and heavy police response.

Assault Call Sparks Bomb Alert

Sussex Police were initially called to Tower Road around 2.30pm on March 22 for an alleged assault. A 50-year-old man was arrested on the spot. But the situation took a serious turn when officers discovered a suspicious object, prompting specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams to rush in.

100-Metre Cordon Declared a False Alarm

Bomb experts conducted a thorough sweep and confirmed the item was safe, posing no threat. The extensive 100-metre exclusion zone was promptly lifted, letting worried residents return to their homes.

The arrested man now faces extra charges related to bomb hoax offences and remains in custody as investigations continue.

Police Thank Locals and Maintain Vigilance

Officers thanked residents for their patience during the frightening ordeal. Although the bomb threat was a false alarm, police are keeping a presence in the area to reassure the community and carry out further searches.
