Woman Found Dead After Fiery Attack in Derry Flat
Detectives launched a murder probe after a woman’s body was discovered in a Derry city centre flat early on Saturday, August 24. Emergency services rushed to a ground-floor flat on Harvey Street at around 4:15 a.m. following reports of a fire.
Victim Suffered ‘Horrific Attack’ Before Fire
Firefighters, paramedics, and police found the woman dead in the bedroom. She is believed to be aged between 40 and 60, but her identity remains unknown. Detective Chief Inspector Anthony Kelly revealed the victim endured a “horrific attack” with multiple injuries before the fire.
“This brutal murder has caused great concern, understandably, but we are working at full pace to find those responsible for this heinous and evil crime,” said DCI Kelly. He also confirmed there would be a heightened police presence in the city in the coming days.
Police Appeal for Witnesses in Early Hours
A crime scene remains in place on Harvey Street as authorities conduct a post-mortem to confirm the exact cause of death. The PSNI is urging anyone who was in the area between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Saturday to come forward, especially if they noticed any suspicious behaviour or unknown vehicles.
“I’m appealing directly to the local community to tell us anything you know. We need to find out who did this,” DCI Kelly pleaded.
