About 40 firefighters responded to a devastating house collapse in south London following a fire and explosion at a terraced home on Galpin’s Road, Thornton Heath.

Rescuers successfully pulled a young child from the rubble and rushed them to a London hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, emergency crews continue their desperate search for four other people who are believed to be trapped under the debris.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) deployed six fire engines and around 40 firefighters from Norbury, Mitcham, West Norwood, Woodside, and neighbouring stations to the scene. They arrived after receiving 13 urgent 999 calls, with the initial alert coming in at 7.08 a.m.

“A terraced house has collapsed as a result of an explosion,” the LFB confirmed. The cause of the fire and explosion remains unknown at this time.

The London Ambulance Service is actively managing the incident and has issued an urgent appeal to the public to reserve 999 calls for genuine medical emergencies only. They advised using the 111 online service for other urgent health needs to keep emergency lines clear for rescue efforts.

This is a developing situation as emergency crews continue to battle to save lives and investigate the cause of the shocking blast in Thornton Heath.
