Brighton Quadruples Repair Crews as Potholes Run Rampant

Brighton & Hove City Council has launched a repair blitz after relentless cold and wet weather tore up roads and pavements. Maintenance teams have jumped from a measly two to a hefty ten this March, rushing to patch the city’s battered streets.

January crews fixed 1,004 potholes, but February’s total soared to a massive 1,374. Meanwhile, over 600 pavement defects have been nipped in the bud across two months.

Transport Chief Promises Major Fix-Up

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, hit back at complaints with a promise:

“Fixing our roads and pavements is a top priority. That’s why we’ve more than quadrupled our repair teams. We fixed more potholes last month than in January, and expect even more in March.”

“Years of underinvestment have left a huge backlog, not just here but nationwide. We’ve committed £8.8 million over the next year, including £2.2 million tackling the worst spots upfront.”

“We’re focusing now on the most serious issues. Long-term, our maintenance plan aims to prolong road life, prevent potholes forming, and cut repair needs.”

How Brighton Tackles Your Pothole Complaints

The council assures every pothole report gets a full inspection. Special patrol squads regularly scour roads to catch trouble before it escalates.

Repairs are ranked by size, depth, location, and danger. The worst hazards can be mended within 2 hours. Others get fixed within 24 hours, 7 days, or up to 28 days depending on severity.

Big Bucks for Better Roads—What’s Next?

This ramped-up repair effort forms part of Brighton’s £8.8 million pledge to tackle its mounting maintenance backlog and drastically improve road quality.

With more crews active and a solid long-term strategy, locals can look forward to fewer potholes and smoother journeys in the near future.
