A man in his twenties has died following a fire near the River Kennet in Reading. Emergency crews raced to Rose Kiln Lane on Thursday evening but could not save him.

Fire Erupts at Riverside Spot

Police and firefighters were called at around 6:50pm on 19 March 2026 after reports of a blaze in the open near the river. The first ambulance arrived at 7:05pm.

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) confirmed crews found the fire on arrival and quickly brought it under control using a CO2 extinguisher and backpack unit.

‘Unexplained’ Death Not Treated as Suspicious

Thames Valley Police said in a statement: “A man aged in his twenties was pronounced deceased at the scene. His death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious.”

They added a file will be prepared for the coroner. His family has been informed and is being supported.

A RBFRS spokesperson offered condolences: “Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

Emergency Services Worked for Hours

  • Fire crews attended from 6:48pm and stayed three hours.
  • Two ambulances were dispatched by South Central Ambulance Service.
  • Police are continuing inquiries but have ruled out suspicious circumstances.
