Flights at Bristol Airport remain suspended for a second consecutive day after a defect was discovered on the runway, leaving passengers facing cancellations, delays and diversions. Operations at the South West’s busiest airport were halted at around 6pm on Friday after the problem was identified during checks. The airport has confirmed that its runway will remain closed until at least 8am on Saturday, August 8, while engineers assess the defect and carry out repairs. Both departing and arriving services have been affected, with passengers urged to check directly with their airlines for the latest information.
Runway closed on safety grounds
Bristol Airport said in a statement: “Due to a defect on the runway, we have suspended operations in order to assess and repair the issue. “We apologise for any inconvenience. Safety is always our number one priority. “Customers should refer to their airlines with any flight queries. “All flights are currently suspended until at least SAT 0800hrs.” The precise nature and extent of the runway defect has not been confirmed.
Passengers face disruption and diversions
The closure has caused significant disruption, with departing flights unable to take off and incoming aircraft affected by the suspension. Some passengers have been left facing cancellations or lengthy delays while airlines make alternative arrangements. Travellers due to use Bristol Airport are being advised to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling. Bristol Airport handles more than 10 million passengers annually, with services connecting the South West to destinations across the UK, Europe and further afield.
Engineers working to reopen runway
Engineers are carrying out assessment and repair work before the runway can safely return to service. Any reopening will depend on the work being completed and the runway being considered safe for aircraft operations. Once the runway reopens, disruption could continue as airlines work to reposition aircraft and crews and clear the backlog of delayed services. Passengers whose flights are cancelled or significantly delayed should contact their airline regarding rebooking, refunds and any assistance to which they may be entitled. Bristol Airport has apologised for the disruption and stressed that passenger and aircraft safety remains its priority.
