A man in his 50s has died after being struck by a lorry on the M4 near Swindon, prompting a major emergency response and the closure of the eastbound carriageway. Emergency services were called to the motorway close to Membury Services at around 8.54am on Thursday (6 August) following reports of a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a heavy goods vehicle. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Thames Valley Police confirmed the deceased was a man in his 50s and said specialist officers are carrying out a full forensic collision investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident. Detective Sergeant Dominique Roe said:
“Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who has sadly died. “We are carrying out a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of this collision and are appealing to anybody who witnessed it, or saw the events leading up to it, to please get in touch. “If you were driving in the area and have dash-cam footage, or have any information that may assist our investigation, please contact Thames Valley Police. Any information, no matter how small it may seem, could be important.”
The M4 eastbound remains closed between Junction 15 (Swindon East) and Junction 14 (Hungerford) while collision investigators examine the scene. The closure has led to significant congestion and lengthy delays, with motorists being urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes where possible.
