Sussex Police have arrested 279 drink and drug drivers during their annual festive crackdown this Christmas. The campaign, running through December and into the New Year, targets deadly road crashes and is supported by strict penalties imposed in court.
Several offenders have received heavy sentences following their arrests. Jay Hickey, 33, who is homeless, was stopped in Worthing on 2 December. After refusing a blood test, he was banned from driving for 16 months and fined £120, in addition to court costs and a victim surcharge.
Billie Saunders, 24, from Crawley, was caught with a breath alcohol level more than double the legal limit on 6 December. She received a 17-month driving ban, substantial fines, court costs, and a victim surcharge.
Krystian Nierwinski, 27, with no fixed address, was nearly four times over the limit and driving without a licence or insurance on 28 December in Bognor Regis. Crawley Magistrates’ Court imposed a 26-month driving ban, a heavy fine, court costs, and a victim surcharge.
Sussex Police warn that drink and drug driving continues to cause horrific crashes with devastating effects on victims and their families. Officers emphasise that even one drink can impair judgement and slow reaction times on the road.
The force pledges to keep publishing court results as prosecutions from the Christmas crackdown proceed.
