Keith Clifton, 58, from Horsham, has been found guilty of a horrific series of child sex crimes following a tense two-week trial at Hove Trial Centre. On Friday, 23 January, a jury convicted him of repeatedly abusing a young girl over many years.
Sussex Police revealed that Clifton’s abuse began when the victim was just four years old. Shockingly, the abuse escalated to rape on her fifth birthday and continued regularly until she turned 13.
Now in her 20s, the brave victim came forward in 2018, which led to a swift police arrest at Clifton’s home. Specialist officers have been supporting her throughout this difficult process.
Clifton was found guilty of multiple charges including six counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault by touching, two counts of assault by penetration, two counts of sexual activity with a child, and one count of causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity. Some charges remain unresolved due to a hung jury.
Clifton is currently in custody and is due to be sentenced on Monday, 23 February, at Hove Trial Centre.
Detective Sergeant Ellen Jones praised the victim’s courage, stating, “I cannot commend the victim enough for the incredible strength and courage she has shown. She has helped bring her abuser to justice.” DS Jones confirmed that the victim continues to receive full support from Sussex Police and partner agencies.
Describing the case as complex and distressing, DS Jones highlighted the success of the police team in removing a dangerous predator from the community. She urged other victims of sexual offences to come forward, saying, “If you are a victim of sexual offending, no matter how long ago, please report it. We’ll fight to get you the justice you deserve.”
