Tragedy struck Southwark yesterday when 16-year-old football prodigy Tommy Ballay-Dean, also known as Junior Dean, lost his life in a devastating flat fire. The blaze broke out at around 3pm in a first-floor apartment just steps from a local fire station.
Four fire engines and 25 firefighters rushed to the scene, fighting desperately to save lives. Junior’s friend, who is also 16 years old, managed to escape but suffered severe facial injuries and remains in a coma.
The Southwark community is in shock as they mourn the loss of Junior, who was more than just a rising football star. He was a cherished member of the community and considered the “heart and soul” of Southwark residents.
Tributes have poured in from family, friends, and local football clubs following the heartbreaking news. Organisers of a fundraiser to support the family’s funeral costs said, “Junior was the heart and soul of Southwark Residents and a cherished member of the wider Southwark community. His faith and talent stood out.”
Junior’s former coach, Hudayfi Awale, paid a touching tribute, saying, “A top footballer, but an even better kid. You lit up every room, always smiling, always making people laugh. Rest in eternal peace, Junior. We’ll make sure your legacy lives on forever.”
Neighbours described the terrifying moments during the fire. 86-year-old Loreen Williams recalled, “There was a young guy shouting ‘There’s somebody still in the building.’” Local mother Elizabeth Coleman added, “My son saw a boy on the floor shouting ‘my friend is still inside.’”
The London Fire Brigade’s Fire Investigation Unit and the Metropolitan Police are currently investigating the cause of the deadly fire. Early indications suggest the fire was non-suspicious.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed, “A 16-year-old boy was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin are being supported by specially trained officers. Another 16-year-old boy is in hospital with serious facial injuries.”
A fundraiser has been launched to help Junior’s family during this heartbreaking time.
