A tragic crash on Christmas Eve has claimed the life of Stephen Jones, a 33-year-old father and football coach from Bootle, Merseyside. The fatal collision occurred at the junction of East Lancashire Road and Stonebridge Lane just before 8.40pm on 24 December 2025.

The incident involved Stephen’s black Ford Puma and a grey Audi A4. He was rushed to hospital with severe injuries but sadly passed away on Saturday 3 January.

Stephen’s family has paid a heartfelt tribute, saying: “Stephen was a loving son, brother, partner, uncle but most importantly a dad, a role that meant the world to him.” They also remembered him as a lifelong Everton fan and a dedicated grassroots football coach who positively impacted many lives. “Stephen’s death will leave a void for many people that won’t ever be filled. He will be missed deeply but loved forever and always in our hearts.”

Stephen’s partner remains seriously ill but stable in hospital. Their eight-year-old son sustained minor injuries and is currently being cared for by relatives.

A 32-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested at the scene and is now on bail. Police are investigating charges including causing death by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. The Serious Collision Investigation Unit is leading the inquiry.

Detective Sergeant Simon Duffy stated: “Eyewitness accounts and dashcam footage are crucial. If you were near M57 or East Lancashire Road around 8.30pm on Christmas Eve, please contact us immediately.” He also praised the prompt actions of those who provided first aid and assisted emergency crews at the scene.
