HM Coastguard has issued a stark warning to parents after three children went missing within just over an hour at the same Dorset beach. The alarming incidents all happened at 1 Beach, with youngsters aged 5, 8, and 9 reported missing between 2.30pm and 3.35pm on 14 July.
Rescue teams from Wyke Regis and 1 Bill Coastguard, the HM Coastguard helicopter from Lee-on-Solent, Weymouth RNLI lifeboat, Weymouth lifeguards, and local police all launched urgent searches. Thankfully, all three children were eventually found safe and well—each located separately.
This trio of incidents highlights a worrying trend, with HM Coastguard receiving multiple reports of missing kids on beaches nationwide during the hot spell.
Mark Rodaway, Duty Commander for UK Coastguard, said: “With this recent heatwave, our operations centres are flooded with 999 calls about missing children at beaches up and down the country. It’s not just parents who panic—our Coastguards worry too. Children can get into danger in shallow water or slip on rocky areas. We urge all parents and guardians to watch their kids closely and always know their whereabouts.
“Use lifeguarded beaches where possible and pick a clear meeting spot. Show your children where the nearest lifeguard station is and tell them to head there if they’re lost. And contact the Coastguard or lifeguards immediately if you can’t see your child.”
He also recommended taking advantage of local wristband schemes that help identify youngsters and give rescuers peace of mind.
