Omar Ali Noori, 31, a rape suspect who escaped justice by fleeing Austria in 2019 after being arrested in 2018, was shockingly granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK by the Home Office in 2023. Noori concealed his criminal history and used four fake identities with five different birthdates on official documents to evade detection.

Noori’s 23-year-old wife later joined him in the UK under family reunification rules, revealing how identity fraud can extend beyond a single individual and impact immigration controls.

The scandal emerged during extradition hearings, where Judge Neeta Minhas criticised Noori for dishonesty on his asylum claim. The judge stated, “Noori was directly asked if he had committed or been accused of an offence in any country or whether he had been detained. His answer was a flat no. This was clearly not accurate.”

Judge Minhas ordered Noori’s extradition back to Austria to serve his prison sentence. For years, Noori managed to avoid detection due to the Home Office’s failure to identify his multiple fake identities or connect him to Austrian criminal records.

Currently, Noori is held at Wandsworth Prison while he appeals his extradition, a process likely to delay his return to face justice.

Meanwhile, concerns over the UK’s asylum vetting system have been heightened by the case of another Afghan asylum seeker, 23-year-old Ahmad Mulakhil, who was jailed for raping and abducting a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton.

The Home Office’s “wait and see” approach and inadequate cross-border checks have created vulnerabilities in the system, allowing dangerous criminals to slip through undetected.

Noori’s case underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reform of the UK’s asylum and deportation processes to prevent further abuse and protect public safety.
