Shock rocked Newton Community Hospital yesterday as a man went on a rampage, attacking six people with a metal bar. The victims suffered cuts, bruises, and injuries to their arms and hands but are now stable.
Merseyside Police arrested a 20-year-old Newton-le-Willows man, originally from Afghanistan, on suspicion of six counts of Section 18 wounding, affray, and criminal damage. He is being held under the Mental Health Act while detectives investigate the incident.
The brutal metal bar used in the assault has been seized for forensic testing. Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses as the hospital remains cordoned off.
To ease community tensions, a mobile police station has been set up at the hospital, with officers conducting high-visibility patrols in the area. Police are urging locals with concerns or information to come forward.
St Helens Local Policing Superintendent Sarah Rotherham said: “We understand that this incident would have caused concern for the local community and I hope the public feel reassured by the increased police presence. I would ask anyone with concerns to speak to one of our officers or contact their local police station.”
