Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes has disclosed a concerning series of arson attacks in north west London aimed at Jewish and Iranian communities. The incidents include attacks on volunteer ambulances, a synagogue, and a Persian-language media office, prompting multiple arrests and a significant police investigation.

The first attack occurred on 23 March, targeting volunteer-led ambulances associated with the Jewish community in Golders Green. Shortly after midnight on 15 April, an attempted arson took place at a synagogue in Finchley. Later that evening, a firebomb was thrown at the offices of a Persian-language media organisation. Fortunately, the fire extinguished itself without causing injuries or damage.

Following the latest attack, three suspects—a 16-year-old boy and two men aged 19 and 21—were arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life and remain in custody. In connection with the Finchley synagogue attack, a 47-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man have also been detained. Additionally, two more arrests related to the Golders Green ambulance incident were recently made. To date, eight arrests have been made, with three individuals charged.

While the incidents have not been officially classified as terrorism, police are keeping all motivations under consideration. Counter Terrorism Policing is leading the investigations, supported by resources from the Metropolitan Police.

Deputy Commissioner Jukes commented, “London’s Jewish communities and the Iranian diaspora have increasingly been targeted by hostile groups and states intent on spreading fear and hate. We understand why these events are deeply worrying.”

Police have increased patrols and resources, resulting in 28 arrests related to hate crimes, particularly those targeting Jewish communities. Jukes warned, “We have seen racist and antisemitic hate crimes and know some individuals are being persuaded or paid to act on behalf of foreign organisations and states. If you act out of hatred, racism, or antisemitism, we will come after you.”

He added, “If you think crime will earn you quick cash for others, think again – the consequences will be severe and far beyond everyday criminality. Those who act for foreign interests will be abandoned and face justice alone.”

Jukes also praised London’s diverse communities for their unity in the face of these threats. “London is inclusive and diverse. Communities came together in solidarity to reject hate and violence after the Golders Green attack. We will continue to do so.”

He concluded with a strong message to Londoners: “You should not live in fear or alter your daily life to feel safe. Police maintain the highest level of sustained operational commitment. We stand with our communities—not just in words, but in visible, daily action.”
