From October 14 to 18, 2015, elite firefighters from across the world competed in Lisbon, Portugal, at the World Rescue Challenge 2015. The Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service’s trauma team demonstrated exceptional skill and determination, finishing in an impressive sixth place on the global stage.
The World Rescue Challenge is a prestigious event that accelerates the exchange of critical emergency rescue and medical techniques used in managing road traffic accidents and other serious incidents. Teams qualify by winning intense local competitions, proving their expertise against top professionals from their countries.
Jayne Collins and Simon Griffiths, the two-person trauma team representing Hereford & Worcester, earned their place at the event by triumphing over strong competitors at the UKRO National Trauma Competition earlier in the year. Competing against 67 other international rescue experts, they showcased advanced casualty care skills and rapid decision-making.
The challenge spanned four demanding days, during which Jayne and Simon faced two realistic and high-pressure scenarios. One involved a casualty who had fallen from a height, and the other simulated a shooting and stabbing incident. With just 10 minutes allotted per challenge, they expertly assessed, diagnosed, and treated their patients, demonstrating world-class emergency response capabilities.
Firefighter Jayne Collins commented on their achievement, saying, “We are so proud of our result and everything we’ve achieved. The real win is what we’ve learned. We’re now ready to push trauma care forward in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.” She added, “This high standard keeps us leading from the front, improving patient care, and ultimately saving lives.”
Chief Fire Officer Mark Yates praised the team’s dedication and skill, stating, “Jayne and Simon’s world-class performance means they’ll bring back invaluable knowledge to train our staff. This ensures the people of Herefordshire and Worcestershire get the very best trauma care available anywhere.”
The success at the World Rescue Challenge highlights that Hereford & Worcester’s firefighters are not only local heroes but also global lifesavers.
