An 8-year-old boy tragically died at the scene after being struck by a speeding motorbike near the junction of Plumstead Road and Lenton Street, SE18, in Greenwich on Sunday, February 19. The collision occurred at around 7:30pm, leaving his brother and a man in his 40s in critical condition at hospital.
Greenwich council’s cabinet member for culture, Adel Khairehc, confirmed that the family were on their way to the Greenwich Islamic Centre for prayer when the crash happened. “Horrific scenes outside @GICMosque — a father and his two young children were hit by a speeding motorcycle on their way to prayer,” Khairehc tweeted.
The rider of the motorbike, a 20-year-old man, sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital. The man in his 40s and the 10-year-old boy, who were crossing the road with the younger boy, remain seriously injured and are fighting for their lives.
The incident has deeply affected the local community as emergency services, including the London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance, responded swiftly to the scene.
The Metropolitan Police are conducting an investigation and have made no arrests so far. A police spokesperson stated, “There is nothing at this stage to suggest this is terrorism related or a hate crime.” Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 020 8285 1574 or dial 101.
