A woman has been given a suspended prison sentence and a driving ban after failing to stop at the scene of a fatal collision involving a privately owned e-scooter in Pitsea, Essex.
The crash occurred on 1 February last year in Ashlyns and resulted in the deaths of Roman and Darcie Casselden.
Deimante Ziobryte, 21, from Benfleet, pleaded guilty at Basildon Magistrates’ Court to failing to stop after the collision.
The fatal incident involved the e-scooter ridden by Roman and Darcie Casselden colliding with a car. Essex Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit confirmed there were no offences relating to the cause of the collision itself but found that the driver did not remain at the scene.
At the court hearing on 6 May, Ziobryte was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for 12 months. She was also disqualified from driving for three years and ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work for failing to stop and not contacting emergency services.
Detective Sergeant Sam Nason, lead investigator, said, “My thoughts, and those of my team, are with Roman and Darcie’s family and friends. Deimante Ziobryte had a clear responsibility to stop at the scene but chose not to. She neither attempted to return nor contacted emergency services and has now been sentenced as a consequence.”
