A man who fatally stabbed a father on a Surrey train has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Darren Pencille, 36, stabbed Lee Pomeroy 18 times in the neck and upper body shortly after boarding the train on January 4.
The brutal stabbing was captured on CCTV following a heated argument sparked by frustration over blocked aisles. The dispute escalated quickly, with Lee Pomeroy following Pencille into the next carriage where threats were exchanged. Pencille warned, “You touch me, you see what happens at the next stop.”
Moments later, CCTV footage showed Pencille pulling a knife and launching a frenzied 27-second attack on the 51-year-old father, who was due to celebrate his birthday the next day. Despite desperate attempts to defend himself, Lee was stabbed 18 times in front of his teenage son.
After the attack, Pencille fled the train as it arrived at Clandon Station, leaving behind a bloodied hat and jacket. He escaped through fields and made several attempts to evade capture across Surrey and Sussex. During this time, he contacted his girlfriend Chelsea Mitchell, who assisted him in hiding.
The pair spent hours planning their next moves, including researching CCTV locations and hair clippers to alter Pencille’s appearance. He travelled from Farnham to Frensham Ponds, Chichester, and Bognor Regis in search of a hiding place. Police arrested Pencille less than 18 hours later at his girlfriend’s flat in Farnham.
Chelsea Mitchell, 28, was sentenced to 28 months in prison for helping Pencille evade capture. She searched for news reports about the stabbing and attempted to assist in changing his appearance.
Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn from British Transport Police said, “No argument should ever end with this level of violence. Lee was a beloved father, husband, and mentor. His loss leaves a huge hole in his family’s lives.”
He added, “I hope the convictions bring some comfort to Lee’s family. They were incredibly supportive throughout the investigation, which led to Pencille’s swift capture and Mitchell’s prosecution.”
Chief Superintendent Ali Barlow of Surrey Police expressed condolences, stating, “Our deepest condolences to Lee’s family and friends. We hope today’s verdict offers them some closure after this tragic loss.”
Darren Pencille was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 28 years. The savage attack has left a grieving family searching for peace.
