The M11 southbound has been closed following a serious multi-car collision between Junction 6 (M25) and Junction 4 (A406 North Circular), Essex Police have confirmed. Emergency services are currently attending the scene, with two lanes on the northbound carriageway also closed as crews manage the incident.
One vehicle has left the carriageway, complicating recovery efforts and contributing to the ongoing disruption. Highways England has warned drivers of at least two miles of stationary traffic caught in the resulting gridlock.
The closure is expected to remain in place until at least 1am on Monday, leading to significant delays for night-time commuters and travellers in the Essex area.
An Essex Roads Policing team is overseeing the situation amid challenging conditions. A spokesperson for Highways England said: “The M11 in Essex is currently closed southbound between J6 (M25) and J4 (A406 North Circular) due to a traffic collision. Essex Police are on scene. Traffic is being diverted via the Solid Black Circle symbol.”
Motorists heading southbound on the M11 are advised to follow the official diversion route to avoid the closure:
- Exit at Junction 6 and join the M25 anti-clockwise
- Leave the M25 at Junction 26, taking the third exit onto the A121 (Honey Lane)
- Follow the A121 for 1.5 miles to the A104 (Epping New Road)
- Take the fourth exit at the roundabout onto the A104
- Continue for 6 miles to the A406 (Waterworks Interchange)
- Exit first onto the A406 North Circular clockwise towards the M11 at the Redbridge interchange
Commuters are strongly encouraged to avoid the affected area if possible. Updates will be provided as police and highway crews work to clear the wreckage and reopen the motorway.
