A 20-year-old Afghan man launched a violent crowbar attack at Newton Community Hospital in Merseyside this afternoon, injuring five people and causing alarm in the local community.

The incident began when the man demanded an appointment but was refused. In response, he smashed a hospital counter and then swung a heavy crowbar at bystanders in the waiting room.

Paramedics quickly arrived and treated the victims, who sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of five counts of wounding with intent, affray, and criminal damage. St Helens Neighbourhood Superintendent Sarah Rotherham said, “Officers attended immediately and the male was swiftly located and arrested.” Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Merseyside Police via social media, call 101, or report anonymously to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

Newton Le-Willows councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron shared that his father, who lives next to the hospital, heard the attack and commended the prompt emergency response.

The Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed they are fully cooperating with police to ensure the safety of staff, patients, and visitors. Residents are advised to avoid the area as police maintain a strong presence during the ongoing investigation.
