Two people have died and two others are critically injured following a horrific crash on the Hampshire M271 motorway. The devastating collision involved two lorries and a car, causing the motorway to be shut down in both directions.
The incident occurred around 6pm last night when emergency crews were called to a brutal crash scene. Two lorry drivers were trapped in their vehicles and had to be cut free by rescue teams. The car caught between the two lorries was left unrecognisable due to the severity of the impact.
Firefighters from Redbridge, St Marys, Totton, and Cosham responded with specialist cutting equipment and platforms to assist in the rescue operation. South Central Ambulance Service deployed two land ambulances, a rapid response paramedic, and their elite Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) to the scene.
An anonymous rescue worker described the scene as “total carnage,” calling it the worst they had encountered in over twenty years of dealing with road traffic accidents. They said, “At first, we didn’t even see the car between the two lorries. The damage was so severe we couldn’t tell how many people were in the vehicle.”
Two victims were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Unfortunately, the two occupants of the car were confirmed dead at the scene. Police officers remain at the site conducting a thorough investigation into how the crash occurred, while fire crews continue with rescue and clearance operations.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area as investigations and clean-up efforts are ongoing on the M271 motorway.
