An intense mock terror attack took place at West Quay shopping centre in Southampton this weekend. Emergency services staged the high-stakes drill to test their ability to respond to a major firearms incident in a crowded venue.
The multi-million-pound West Quay shopping centre became the setting for a dramatic training exercise on Sunday evening, when the mall was closed to the public. Firefighters from Hampshire Fire and Rescue collaborated with Hampshire Police and paramedics from South Central Ambulance Service to carry out a full-scale terror scenario.
The intense drill, which had been in planning for over a year, simulated masked and hooded gunmen opening fire on shoppers. Firefighters and HART paramedics wore bulletproof vests and Kevlar helmets as they managed a scenario involving 80 casualties. The exercise focused on coordinated response efforts and how armed fire crews operate alongside police and medical teams during a mass shooting.
Event organisers described the training exercise as a “great success.” They emphasised that this type of realistic training could be crucial in the event of a real tragedy, potentially saving countless lives.
