Fire crews rushed to Ocean Quay in Southampton after flames erupted on a 100-metre vessel undergoing a refit. The fire broke out just before 1.30pm on the ship named Karissa, causing chaos on the quayside.
Workers on board were carrying out hot works when scaffolding boards suddenly caught fire. Around 20 workers had to evacuate the vessel immediately. Thanks to the swift arrival of multiple fire crews, the blaze was contained to one section.
Firefighters from St Mary’s, Hightown, Cosham, Romsey, Gosport, Eastleigh, and Redbridge scrambled to the scene. Two crews used breathing apparatus and high-pressure water jets to tackle the flames. South Central Ambulance Service sent a hazard area response team, but thankfully no injuries were reported.
A Fire and Rescue service spokesman said: “The cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
With damage limited and no casualties, fire crews were praised for their rapid response. More updates are expected as the inquiry continues.
