The westbound M27 near Portsmouth remains shut after a major collision occurred on the night of Sunday 26 June. All three lanes are closed between Junction 11 (Fareham) and Junction 12 (Cosham/M275) and are not expected to reopen until at least 7am on Monday morning.

The crash happened shortly after 10.30pm when a car lost control, mounted the embankment, and flipped onto its roof, blocking the middle lane. The overturned vehicle is surrounded by a large goods vehicle, a coach, and two other cars.

Emergency services from Cosham, Southsea, and other rescue teams responded quickly to the scene. Fire engines, three ambulances, and South Central Ambulance Service’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) are assisting in efforts to free two people trapped inside the overturned car, one of whom is believed to be female.

Approximately 250 vehicles have been stranded behind the crash site. Police are managing the situation by turning vehicles around and escorting them back to the Junction 11 slip road. Many drivers have abandoned their cars and are waiting on the hard shoulder.

Collision investigators are examining the scene by torchlight, while a crane and recovery truck from Boarhunt garage have been called in to upright and tow the flipped car. Authorities warn that the motorway closure could last well into the early hours, possibly until 5.30am or later.

Drivers are advised to follow the recommended diversion: leave the M27 at Junction 11, take the 3rd exit at the roundabout onto the A27, stay left and take the 1st exit at the next roundabout, then continue on the A27 (Porchester Road) eastbound to the Portsbridge interchange roundabout. From there, take the 2nd exit back onto the M27 at Junction 12.

Motorists are urged to allow extra journey time or avoid the area if possible.

Hampshire Road Policing Unit is appealing for witnesses. Anyone with dash cam footage of the vehicle involved before the collision is asked to contact police by calling 101 with any information.
