Police closed both lanes of The Avenue in Southampton following a serious collision on Thursday night. At around 10.55pm, a pedestrian was struck by a black Mercedes CLK 220 Avantgarde near the junction with Westwood Road.

The Avenue was sealed off between Winn Road and Westwood Road just before 11pm. The closure remained in place until at least 4am the following morning while collision investigators examined the scene. Drivers were advised to avoid the area, with local diversions implemented.

Armed response officers arrived promptly and provided first aid to the seriously injured pedestrian before paramedics took over. The victim, a 27-year-old man, was rushed to Southampton General Hospital with dangerous head and back injuries. A spokeswoman from South Central Ambulance Service confirmed that two ambulance crews, a rapid response team, and air ambulance staff attended the incident.

The driver of the Mercedes, who was uninjured but treated for shock, was arrested after police questioning. The investigation is ongoing.

An eyewitness, a passenger on a nearby Unilink bus delayed by the road closure, reported that the pedestrian was attempting to cross The Avenue when he was hit by the vehicle and knocked onto the road.

The collision caused significant disruption to local bus routes and road traffic during the closure period.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information about the collision is urged to contact Totton Roads Police on 101.
