A tragic accident occurred on North Street, Havant, when a 62-year-old woman died after her scarf was caught in the rear wheel of a blue 1970s-style beach buggy.
Gillian Sandle, a passenger from Hayling Island, was riding in the open-top buggy on Sunday afternoon when the incident happened. Her scarf became entangled in the buggy’s rear wheels, causing a serious accident.
Passers-by witnessed the event and immediately rushed to assist, attempting to free her before emergency services arrived at the scene.
Paramedics were called shortly after 12.30pm and the road was closed while crews treated Gillian at the location. She was then transported to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham in critical condition.
A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service said, “We were called to reports of a woman injured while using an open-top vehicle. The 65-year-old had a scarf wrapped around her neck which became trapped in the vehicle. Despite rapid treatment and hospital care, she sadly died of her injuries on Sunday afternoon.”
Sergeant Melanie Adcock from the police urged anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. She stated, “This took place at a busy time of day,” emphasizing the importance of gathering more information about the tragic event.
Members of the public who helped at the scene performed CPR before the ambulance arrived, but unfortunately, the injuries were fatal despite their desperate efforts.
This fatal accident serves as a sobering reminder to remain vigilant around moving vehicles, especially when wearing loose clothing or accessories.
