A woman has tragically died this morning in a devastating crash on the A40 in Oxfordshire. Dangerous icy and foggy conditions led to a series of major collisions between Witney and Burford Road, resulting in the road being closed in both directions for several hours.

Thames Valley Police confirmed the fatality just before 10.30am, describing the incident as “very serious.” The A40 remains shut between Witney and Burford as investigators continue to examine the scene. Authorities expect the westbound carriageway to reopen later today, while the eastbound side remains closed.

Motorists at the scene described the chaos and destruction caused by the pile-up. Ben Starkey, a driver caught in the incident, told the Oxford Mail: “There were two cars crashed into each other, a vehicle crumpled beyond recognition, and a lady on the floor in serious condition. I saw about 10 smashed vehicles ahead and several more behind.” He also witnessed emergency responders performing CPR on a woman, adding, “It was terrible.”

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed that two patients are in critical condition and have been rushed to John Radcliffe Hospital’s Major Trauma Unit. Additionally, between 10 and 15 people suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The collision involved a 1km stretch of the A40 and resulted in six vehicles being heavily damaged. Emergency crews on site since the first call at 8.22am include three ambulances, rapid response teams, police officers, and an air ambulance car.

The icy road conditions are being blamed for the multi-vehicle disaster that has left the A40 gridlocked and the local community mourning this morning.
