Fareham Flyover was shut down this evening after a teenage cyclist was hit by a car, causing significant traffic disruption in the area. The incident occurred on Eastern Road, prompting police to close the flyover for several hours.
The crash happened at around 6.10pm when a teenager riding a pushbike collided head-on with a car, striking the vehicle’s windscreen. The young cyclist, who was reportedly not wearing a helmet, sustained a head injury and was immediately taken to hospital by ambulance.
In addition to the cyclist’s injuries, a female passenger in the car was also hurt. She suffered whiplash-type injuries and was transported to hospital as well. Fortunately, her condition is not considered serious.
The closure of the flyover caused traffic chaos, with drivers trapped on the road forced to reverse back to Market Quay Roundabout. The road remained closed for just over two hours before reopening. Despite the disruption, local buses using the bus lane were able to continue running without interruption.
A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance Service said, “We were called at 6.04pm to a collision between a car and cyclist on Eastern Way, Fareham. The male cyclist had a head injury and the female driver a back injury. Both were taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.”
