HM Coastguard Romney Marsh sprang into action on Wednesday evening during a routine local patrol after receiving an urgent call from the Solent Operations room. Several people were reported trapped by the rising tide at Camber Sands.
Sussex Police arrived quickly at the scene and spotted two individuals stranded on a wreck, already surrounded by fast-encroaching water. Two brave coastguards entered the water with tethered lines to reach the trapped casualties.
The Pett Level Independent Rescue Boat joined the mission and played a key role in bringing the two people safely back to shore.
Once ashore, the rescued individuals were immediately handed over to the South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAMB) for urgent medical care. Meanwhile, HM Coastguard Rye Bay and the RNLI Rye Harbour Lifeboat Station were on standby as crucial backup, ready to respond to any further developments.
This dramatic rescue highlights the importance of quick, coordinated action between emergency services. The public is reminded that in coastal emergencies, they should always dial 999 and ask for “The Coastguard”. A prompt call could save lives.
