Chaos erupted on Askham Lane, Westfield Place, and Westfield Park in York yesterday evening as a large group of youths gathered between 5.30pm and 6.45pm. Police officers moved in to control the situation, but the incident escalated when a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) was assaulted.
Alongside the assault, officers dealt with several public order offences and widespread anti-social behaviour. The rising tension on the streets of York has prompted North Yorkshire Police to launch a thorough investigation into the disorder.
The police force is currently reviewing body-worn camera footage from officers present at the scene to identify those responsible. Senior Commander for York, Superintendent Mark Khan, condemned the violence, stating: “This type of behaviour is unacceptable and will not be tolerated on the streets of York. I am appalled that a member of police staff was assaulted during this incident. This member of staff is now receiving support and we will be taking swift action to deal with those responsible.”
Superintendent Khan added: “Once again, I would urge members of the local community to work with the police and pass on any information that could assist with our live investigation immediately.”
If you witnessed the incident or have crucial information, contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference 12220069859. To remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
