The A21 in East Sussex is completely closed in both directions between the A28 at Baldslow and the A2100 near Battle following a massive building fire and a burst water main.
The incident began with a large fire at a building on Ebdens Hill, located right next to the road. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly to tackle the blaze, while Sussex Police traffic officers arrived to manage traffic on this busy route.
Thankfully, the fire has now been extinguished. However, the disruption continues as a nearby burst water main has forced authorities to keep the road closed. Emergency crews are currently waiting for Southern Water to arrive and repair the leak before the A21 can be reopened.
National Highways has not provided a timeline for when the road will reopen. Drivers are advised to prepare for significant delays and consider alternative routes or postponing their journeys if possible.
Suggested diversions to avoid gridlock are as follows:
Southbound / Coastbound: Follow signs marked with a hollow circle symbol. Exit the A21 at B2089 Park Lane, head east to Cripps Corner, then continue along the B2089. Turn right at the Broad Oak junction with the A28, follow the A28 towards Hastings, and rejoin the A21 at Baldslow.
Northbound / Londonbound: Follow signs marked with a hollow square symbol. Exit the A21 at Baldslow and merge onto the A28. Continue to Broad Oak, then turn left onto the B2089 heading west through Cripps Corner. Stay on the B2089 back to the A21.
Drivers should allow extra travel time and stay updated on the situation. This major disruption is expected to last for several hours. Please stay safe and plan your journeys carefully.
