A major crash early this morning has resulted in the closure of the M1 southbound between Junction 11 and Junction 10 near Luton, Bedfordshire. Commuters are facing delays of up to 60 minutes during peak travel times.
The collision involved a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and a car and occurred at approximately 5.46am. Emergency services, including Bedfordshire Police and National Highways, quickly responded to the scene to manage the serious incident and begin investigations.
Authorities have not yet announced when this important section of the motorway will reopen. Motorists are advised to expect extended disruption as emergency crews work to clear the wreckage.
Drivers are urged to follow the official diversion route marked by signs with a solid black circle. The recommended alternative route is as follows:
Exit the M1 at Junction 11 and proceed to the A505 roundabout. Take the A505 exit towards 1. Continue along the A505 to the A505/A5/B489 crossroads in Dunstable. Turn left onto the A5 southbound. Follow the A5 through Dunstable and Markyate before rejoining the M1 at Junction 9.
Motorists should allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes if possible. Officials advise caution and patience as the diversion route is expected to be congested.
