Phillip Fraczek, aged 22, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years and four months for the murder of 79-year-old Franklin Agbotui in West Ham.

The fatal attack occurred on 15 May 2024 inside a block of flats on Plaistow Road. Fraczek was found attempting to enter multiple properties in the building before falling asleep on the floor.

Neighbours alerted the police after hearing banging and screams, prompting emergency services to respond. Officers discovered Franklin seriously injured. Despite emergency CPR and rapid transfer to hospital, Franklin died on 20 May 2024.

Metropolitan Police officers chased and arrested Fraczek nearby. During the arrest, Fraczek assaulted the officers.

Brave Police Capture Killer

Officers acted quickly after a neighbour spotted Fraczek fleeing the scene, initiating a foot chase. He was arrested two streets away on Geere Road. At the time of arrest, Fraczek’s knuckles and trainers were bloodied. Forensic tests confirmed the blood belonged to the victim.

Although Fraczek resisted arrest, police successfully detained him, preserving vital forensic evidence.

Community Shaken By Attack

Detective Superintendent Kelly Allen described Franklin Agbotui as a kind, retired Merchant Navy veteran who was known for tending the shared garden and being a pillar in the local community.

She condemned the unprovoked and savage nature of the attack, which has deeply affected the neighbourhood. Detective Superintendent Allen praised the courage of the Metropolitan Police officers who intervened early and brought the suspect into custody.

Family Pay Tribute

Franklin’s family released a heartfelt victim impact statement highlighting his quiet, humble life built on integrity, respect, and faith. They described his constant support, guidance, and presence that have now been lost.

The family spoke of the profound emotional and practical impact of his death and the ongoing void left in their lives and the wider church community.

Court Proceedings And Sentence

Phillip Fraczek pleaded guilty to murder and assault on an emergency worker at Snaresbrook Crown Court on 6 February 2025.

On 27 April 2025, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 20 years and four months, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
