Lewes Bonfire Night 2024 drew approximately 40,000 people, far exceeding last year’s attendance, while maintaining safety throughout the event. Sussex Police and emergency services have praised the night as a major success, with most crowds dispersing by midnight on November 6.
The iconic Lewes Bonfire celebrations, known for their fiery traditions and intense festivities, require months of preparation. Sussex Police collaborated closely with emergency services, local councils, transport operators, community groups, and bonfire societies to ensure the safety of all attendees.
Emergency crews were active but maintained control during the evening. St John Ambulance and South East Coast Ambulance treated 46 individuals, with only three requiring hospital admission. East Sussex Fire and Rescue responded to several minor bonfire-related incidents, including:
- 7:57 PM: Torches found burning on the ground at Winterbourne Hollow; firefighters stood down before arrival.
- 8:09 PM: A telegraph pole caught fire from torches and was quickly extinguished with foam and hoses.
- 8:41 PM: Smoke observed from a lamp post resulted in a road closure while crews assessed the situation.
Sussex Police confirmed four arrests during the festivities. A 15-year-old was initially detained for possession of a knuckle duster but later released. Two adults, aged 24 and 25, were arrested on suspicion of common assault. Another individual was detained for drunken and disorderly behaviour. All suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
Chief Superintendent Howard Hodges stated: “We thank the public for their support to ensure the Lewes Bonfire celebrations were once again a spectacular event that has been enjoyed safely.”
